The Boomerang Theatre in Taree had the honour of hosting the first official NSW screening of the much publicised Australian film “Tall Timbers”.1
Opening night in Taree was 23 August 1937 and the owner, Mr Carson, had another treat in store for his patrons. The female lead, Shirley Ann Richards, would be making a personal appearance before the screening!2
The film had premiered in Brisbane and Miss Richards and her mother arrived by rail in Taree on Sunday 22 August. Staying overnight at the Royal Hotel, the actress was accorded a civic reception on the Monday morning. After lunch she visited both Taree Primary School and Taree High School where she spoke to students before taking afternoon tea with the ladies of the CWA.3
In the evening a glamorously attired Miss Richards was introduced to a packed house at the Boomerang Theatre and, having acknowledged the warm welcome extended by the Taree community, she accepted gifts presented by two young girls. Vivienne Butterworth presented her with flowers, chocolates and perfume4 and Beryl Morris from Purfleet Mission gave her a boomerang made by Joe Simon.5 The audience then settled down to watch the film.
Miss Richards continued her journey to Sydney on that evening’s Brisbane Express.6
